How Pulp Mill Operations Use Engineered Plastics

Plastic wear components are specified throughout the pulp mill — from woodyard chip handling through the pulping process and into the paper machine area.

Chip handling and conveyor systems

Wood chip conveyors from the chipper to the chip pile and from storage to the digester are high-throughput, abrasive, and in dry chip environments, potentially subject to static charge buildup. UHMW is the standard liner and wear strip material for chip conveyors. Tivar Antistatic grades are specified where static discharge is a hazard in dry chip environments.

Chip bin and silo liners

Chip storage bins and silos use UHMW liner panels on the walls and floors to keep chip flowing without bridging or buildup. UHMW's low surface friction prevents the adhesion of wet or frozen chip on bin walls — a significant operational problem in Alberta's climate.

Pulping and chemical handling

The pulping process involves white liquor, black liquor, and other process chemicals that are corrosive to many materials. UHMW has good chemical resistance to the alkali-based process chemicals used in kraft pulping. For the most chemically aggressive zones, material compatibility should be confirmed at the time of inquiry.

Bleach plant components

Bleaching chemicals — chlorine dioxide, hydrogen peroxide, and caustic — are aggressive to many engineering materials. [UHMW](/materials/uhmw/) and HDPE are commonly specified for bleach plant wear components and structural parts. Specific chemical compatibility should be confirmed for the process conditions in question.

Paper machine components

On the wet end of a paper machine, plastic components — guide rolls, doctor blade holders, wear strips — are specified for their moisture resistance, low friction, and resistance to the paper stock and process water chemistry.

Custom machined components

Tivar UHMW - Specifically Tivar Antistatic — is the correct specification for dry chip handling environments where electrostatic discharge is a hazard. Standard UHMW does not dissipate static charge; Tivar Antistatic grades are designed to. For the most severe chip handling wear applications, Tivar 1000 provides additional wear resistance.

In dry wood chip environments, electrostatic charge can build up on standard UHMW liner surfaces. Whether Tivar Antistatic is a required specification depends on the specific environment, the chip moisture content, and the relevant safety standards for the facility. Pulp mill safety teams and engineers should assess the static hazard for their specific application and specify accordingly. Pepco can supply and machine both standard UHMW and Tivar Antistatic grades.

UHMW has good resistance to the sodium hydroxide (NaOH) based white liquor and black liquor used in kraft pulping at typical process temperatures. For specific chemical concentrations and temperatures, contact Pepco with the process chemistry at inquiry — we can confirm compatibility or recommend an alternative.

Yes. Chip bin liner panels are typically cut from UHMW sheet to the dimensions the bin wall requires. Non-standard sizes are standard work for Pepco. Provide the bin geometry or liner dimensions at inquiry.
