Marine Applications

When corrosion is the enemy, marine equipment needs plastic components engineered to handle salt water and constant exposure.

Plastic Parts & Components for Marine Operations

Steel corrodes in marine environments. Marine plastic parts — UHMW and HDPE — don't. Pepco Plastics manufactures engineered plastic components for marine applications from our Alberta facility, supplying dock and harbour infrastructure, commercial vessel operations, and marine equipment across Western Canada. For dock fenders, pile guides, marine wear strips, and corrosion-resistant structural components, the case for engineered plastic over metal is simply the maintenance cost of the alternative.

How Marine Operations Use Engineered Plastics

Marine environments impose corrosion loads on metal components that are not sustainable without continuous maintenance. Engineering plastics resist saltwater, freshwater, UV exposure, and biological fouling in ways that eliminate the corrosion failure mode entirely.

Dock fender systems

UHMW fender panels and pile cap covers take the impact of vessel contact with docks and harbour structures. UHMW absorbs impact energy without fracturing — and unlike steel, it does not corrode, rust, or transfer abrasive corrosion products to vessel hulls. Dock fender systems machined from UHMW or cut from sheet are a standard Pepco application.

Pile guides and bearing blocks

Floating dock systems and marine structures use plastic guide blocks and bearing pads at pile contact points. UHMW and HDPE are standard materials — they slide smoothly against steel pilings without galling, handle the wet/dry cycling of tidal variation, and require no maintenance lubrication.

Marine wear strips and vessel components

Commercial vessels, tugboats, and workboats use UHMW wear strips on fendering rails, rub rails, and keel contact surfaces. UHMW protects the vessel structure and reduces wear on both the vessel and whatever surface it contacts.

Cutting boards and food-contact marine components

Commercial fishing vessels and processing boats use HDPE cutting surfaces and food-contact structural components. Food-grade HDPE resists bacteria, cleans easily, and does not rust or splinter — the requirements for fish processing and commercial galley applications.

Structural and outfitting components

HDPE structural panels, guards, and machined components are used throughout marine outfitting where corrosion resistance, weight reduction, and the elimination of maintenance coatings are the design drivers

UHMW plastic

UHMW is the primary material for marine fender, wear, and impact-absorption applications. Its combination of impact toughness, low friction, moisture resistance, and corrosion immunity makes it the standard specification for dock fenders, pile guides, and vessel wear surfaces.

HDPE

HDPE is specified for structural panels, food-contact surfaces, and corrosion-resistant components throughout marine outfitting. Black HDPE with UV stabilizers is the correct specification for outdoor marine structural applications exposed to direct sunlight. Food-grade HDPE meets requirements for commercial fishing and food processing vessel applications.

Pepco's Capability in Marine

Pepco machines and supplies marine plastic components from our Alberta facility. Western Canada's marine sector spans BC's coastal operations, inland lakes and rivers, and freshwater marine infrastructure throughout Alberta and the Prairie provinces. Pepco supplies to all of these. Standard marine components — fender panels, pile cap covers, wear strips — are cut and profiled from UHMW and HDPE sheet stock. Custom machined marine components are produced from drawings through Pepco's CNC plastic machining capability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. UHMW has essentially zero moisture absorption and resists saltwater, mild acids, and alkalis without degradation. It does not corrode and does not require protective coatings for saltwater service. UV resistance of natural UHMW is moderate — for long-term outdoor marine applications, black or UV-stabilized grades are the better specification.

Dock fender panel thickness depends on the impact loads the fender is designed to absorb — vessel size, docking speed, and dock structure geometry. Standard marine fender panels range from 1″ to 4″ UHMW depending on the application. Pepco can advise on thickness selection based on the vessel and dock specifications at inquiry.

Food-grade HDPE meets FDA requirements for food contact, making it suitable for fish processing surfaces, cutting boards, and food-handling structural components on commercial vessels. HDPE is the standard specification for marine food-contact plastic applications. Specify food-grade at inquiry and Pepco can provide material certification.

Yes. Replacement panels, guides, and wear components for existing dock systems are standard work — cut and profiled to match existing dimensions. If you have the original dimensions or can measure the worn component, Pepco can quote a replacement.
