Chemical Applications

From corroded steel to degraded coatings, chemical processing environments demand materials that can survive constant exposure.

Chemical-Resistant Plastic Parts & Components for Chemical Processing

Chemical processing environments destroy metal components on predictable timelines. Acids, alkalis, and process solvents corrode steel, degrade coatings, and create contamination problems in product streams. Chemical-resistant plastic parts — particularly HDPE — eliminate the corrosion failure mode for components in direct chemical contact, reducing replacement frequency and eliminating the contamination risk that corroding metal components create.

Pepco Plastics manufactures chemical-resistant plastic components for chemical processing applications from our Alberta facility.

How Chemical Processing Operations Use Engineered Plastics

Chemical plants and processing facilities specify plastic components wherever direct chemical contact makes metal maintenance impractical or creates product contamination risk.

Tank fittings and liners

HDPE fittings, flanges, and tank liner panels are specified for chemical storage and mixing tanks handling acids, alkalis, and organic process chemicals. HDPE resists a broad range of process chemicals at ambient and moderately elevated temperatures without corroding or contaminating the contents.

Pipe supports and structural components

Chemical plant infrastructure uses HDPE structural components, pipe guides, and support blocks in corrosive environments where metal hardware would require continuous coating maintenance.

Pump and valve components

Machined plastic wear components in chemical handling pumps and valves — wear rings, valve seats, guide bushings — are specified where process chemistry would corrode metal equivalents or where metal contamination of the product stream is a concern.

Scrubber and treatment system components

Chemical scrubbing and treatment systems use HDPE and UHMW components in chemical contact zones where the process fluid chemistry eliminates metal as a material option.

Custom fabricated components

Chemical plant maintenance regularly requires replacement components in materials compatible with the specific process chemistry. Pepco machines custom plastic components from drawings or samples for chemical plant maintenance requirements.

HDPE

HDPE is the primary material for chemical processing plastic components. HDPE resists most dilute and concentrated acids (including HCl and H₂SO₄), most alkalis (including NaOH), and a broad range of organic solvents at ambient temperatures. Its chemical resistance profile, combined with easy machinability and food-contact grades for regulated applications, makes it the first-choice material for chemical processing plastic parts.

UHMW plastic

UHMW is specified in chemical processing applications where abrasion resistance is also required — chemical slurry handling, abrasive chemical conveyance, and applications where the process stream contains solid abrasives in a corrosive carrier fluid.

For specific chemical compatibility, the operating temperature and concentration are the critical variables. HDPE's resistance to a given chemical can vary significantly with temperature and concentration. Pepco recommends confirming specific compatibility at the inquiry stage for non-standard process chemistries. For waste water and treatment plant applications with overlapping chemical resistance requirements, see Pepco's waste water page.

Pepco's Capability in Chemical Processing

Pepco machines chemical-resistant plastic components from our Alberta facility through our CNC plastic machining capability. Chemical plant components often have specific dimensional requirements — flanges, fittings, and valve components that must match existing piping dimensions. Pepco quotes from drawings and machines to the dimensions specified.

Material traceability and documentation are available on request for chemical processing components that require material certification. Specify the documentation requirement at the time of inquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

HDPE has broad chemical resistance to most dilute and concentrated acids (hydrochloric, sulfuric, nitric at moderate concentrations), alkalis (sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide), and many organic solvents. HDPE is not recommended for halogenated solvents (chlorinated compounds) or aromatic hydrocarbons at elevated temperatures. For specific process chemistry, provide the chemical, concentration, and temperature at inquiry — Pepco will confirm compatibility or recommend an alternative.

Yes. HDPE flanges, fittings, and pipe connection components machined to specific dimensions are standard work. Standard pipe flange dimensions (ANSI, ASME) are commonly requested — Pepco can machine to these standards. For non-standard dimensions, provide the drawing or measurement at inquiry.

Black HDPE with UV stabilizers is the correct specification for outdoor applications exposed to direct sunlight. Natural HDPE has limited UV resistance and will degrade under prolonged UV exposure without UV stabilizer additives. Specify outdoor application at inquiry.

Material certificates of compliance are available on request for HDPE and UHMW components used in chemical processing applications. Specify the documentation requirement at the time of inquiry.
